  • The Wall Street Journal writes: “The strength of [Jimmy] López’s music is its bright, brass-tinged propulsiveness, a riot of orchestral color.…”
  • A Buenos Aires native, composer Alberto Ginastera studied at Tanglewood with the legendary Aaron Copland. Of his Variaciones, Ginastera says, “Instead of using folkloristic material, I try to achieve an Argentine atmosphere through…my own thematic and rhythmic elements.”
  • Soprano Goitsemang Lehobye won raves during 2018 performances with the Minnesota Orchestra in Minneapolis and on tour in South Africa.
  • Contemporary Mexican composer Arturo Márquez’s Danzón No. 2 is a well-known piece that was featured in season two of the Amazon television series Mozart in the Jungle.

Artist Lonnie Broden joined the Minnesota Orchestra on its August 2018 tour to South Africa and enjoyed experiencing musicians from South Africa join musicians from the Minnesota Orchestra and the Minnesota Chorale to create truly magic musical moments. Her display captures the grandeur of the South African animals, landscape, and the people with their history, resilience, and talent.

Join us in the Target Atrium for a special screening of a newly produced short film by Star Tribune journalists (and other works) about the Orchestra’s 2018 South Africa tour, including a discussion with its creators. Visit the Balcony A Lobby all weekend long to view photos from the Star Tribune who accompanied the Orchestra on their momentous tour to South Africa.
