Sally Reynolds and Hampton Smith

My husband Hamp enjoying a beverage on Peavey Plaza before a summer concert last August.

Why I Give:

“We value having a high-level performing orchestra in the community.”

Favorite Minnesota Orchestra Moment:

“The first date my husband and I went on was to a Minnesota Orchestra concert—I should say our first two dates! He had two concerts remaining on his season series and asked me to choose one. I replied that they both looked great, so he said, “We’ll go to them both!” That’s when I knew he was the one for me. This was January 1985–over 35 years ago—we got married a year and a half later. While raising kids we didn’t get to very many concerts, but now that we’re empty nesters we’re making up for lost time. The last live concert we attended at Orchestra Hall was Valentine’s Day—-a lovely evening of Ravel and Bartok. We were also delighted and surprised to see our son in attendance...with his girlfriend! The tradition continues.”

Julia Lavanger

2019-20 Season Opening concert featuring pianist Juho Pohjonen performing the Grieg Piano Concerto.

Why I Give:

“I give because I have been attending the Orchestra since high school with my mom and grandma and this has become our tradition. I always look forward to a new season and a new chance to experience wonderful music”

Favorite Minnesota Orchestra Moment:

“Being able to see one of my favorite pieces, the Grieg Piano Concerto, performed in person, was so special to me and I want to continue to make that experience possible to other people as well.”

Amy Rosenthal

Cameron Carpenter’s International Touring Organ on stage at Orchestra Hall, 2017-18 season.

Why I Give:

“For many years I had only attended concerts occasionally because I had a difficult work schedule. But as that part of my life changed, I began buying season tickets and going more frequently. Prior to Covid, I was attending at least monthly, sometimes more than that. I love the variety: Friday evenings, coffee concerts on Thursday, movie scores, holiday pops, atrium concerts. Every time I enter the building, no matter what time, no matter what event, I feel warmly welcomed and my patronage appreciated.  That welcoming, plus reading about bus transportation for students to get to Orchestra Hall, motivated me to make my very first donation. My donations have grown since then because I recognize the vital role that the Orchestra plays in the culture of the community. “

Favorite Minnesota Orchestra Moment:

“There have been many favorite moments, but a particular standout was in 2018: the Friday night performance of the West Side Story live film accompaniment. It was so exciting, so mesmerizing, so utterly perfect that when I got up on Saturday morning, I bought a ticket for that night and went to see it again.”

David Hunter

Sarah Hicks conducting the Orchestra for A Musical Feast in 2015.

Why I Give:

“Because I love classical music. It inspires me in a positive way, especially in times of stress like now. The musicians are so dedicated, talented and passionate about their craft.”

Favorite Minnesota Orchestra Moment:

“My partner, who is not a usual classical music fan, went with me to the first movie/soundtrack performance and has become a huge fan of all of the Orchestra's 'family-style"' concerts, pre-concert programs and the incomparable Sarah Hicks.”

Jesse Horowitz

"Sharing Star Wars night with my wingman!

Why I Give:

“To support one of the great art forms that more people should experience, and to honor the love of classical music that I learned from and shared with my late father.”

Favorite Minnesota Orchestra Moment:

“Sharing Star Wars night with my son.”

Wendy Lukaszewski

Students arriving at Orchestra Hall for a Young People’s Concert.

Why I Give:

“I am a community musician, and love this orchestra, and classical music in general. I am also a member of the Minnesota Chorale, and have enjoyed the privilege of singing with the orchestra many times. Supporting it is important. I also usher at Young People’s concerts as a YPSCA member.”

Favorite Minnesota Orchestra Moment:

“There have been many. The concerts are spectacular, but I especially love the Young People’s concerts and witnessing the excitement of the children. It bodes well for the future of classical music!”

Brenda Bush

"My son Simon. Inspired by the Minnesota Orchestra musicians and finally playing on the Orchestra Hall stage himself as part of the cello section of the Minnesota Youth Symphony."

Why I Give:

“The Orchestra brings me joy, the musicians are incredible, and I love the variety of music and styles.”

Favorite Minnesota Orchestra Moment:

“I have taken all different friends and family to concerts. Each one was a performance that fit that person. That’s what is so special.”

Kate Johnson

Gauteng Choristers and Minnesota Chorale singers join voices as they circle around the Roberta Mann Grand Foyer of the Orchestra Hall lobby after a performance of Vaughn William’s Dona Nobis Pacem, 2019.

Why I Give:

“They are the professional, world-class orchestra with SOUL! We love the individual members, their personalities, everyone's commitment to creating relationships with musical groups from other cultures in other parts of the world. This makes our orchestra super-special! Not to mention their extraordinary musicianship, and the increasingly diverse offerings at concerts. We LOVE our orchestra, in the most basic and heartfelt way. We cannot wait to hear them again, to cheer them again, in Orchestra Hall. They are troupers, heroes, and they bring joy to our community. Thank you, all!”

Favorite Minnesota Orchestra Moment:

“The joint concert with members of the Gauteng Choristers, Minnesota Chorale and the Orchestra. What a moment! We have traveled many times in South Africa, and this event meant so very much to us.”

Karen Erickson

Kristi, "Beethoven," Karla and Karen on January 13, 2006, at Orchestra Hall.

Why I Give:

“I give to inspire young musicians.”

Favorite Minnesota Orchestra Moment:

“Meeting Beethoven in the lobby of Orchestra Hall a few years ago when my sisters and I attended a concert.”

An Anonymous Donor

Conductor Sarah Hicks and violist Sam Bergman addressing the audience during an Inside the Classics concert, 2019.

Why I Give:

“Music is life in our family. Vocal, instrument, digital, it makes no difference to us. Life is music and music is life.”

Favorite Minnesota Orchestra Moment:

“Sarah and Sam, Music and the Mind was incredibly educational and thought-provoking! Young People’s concerts as my daughters grew up around the Minnesota Orchestra. Special performances such as Pink Martini and Kristin Chenoweth; obviously the classical series too!”
