Strauss’ Metamorphosen for Strings

Music Director Osmo Vänskä and 23 Minnesota Orchestra string musicians performed Richard Strauss’ Metamorphosen on September 12, 2020, as part of the first concert inside Orchestra Hall since mid-March, co-produced with Twin Cities PBS (TPT) and Classical Minnesota Public Radio. Listen to a selection from this powerful work.

As World War II came to a close, 80-year-old Strauss faced a deep, internal struggle surrounding his own career, his idealism and a despair for things lost. Metamorphosen is composed for 23 independent string voices that come together in a united river of sound, embodying this melancholy and soul-searching time.
