Press Room: Press Releases

Osmo Vänskä and Minnesota Orchestra to Perform at BBC Proms Festival, August 6, 2018

Vänskä will lead an all-American program featuring Bernstein’s Overture to Candide, Gershwin’s Concerto in F with pianist Inon Barnatan, and Ives’ Second Symphony

Proms performance serves as the prelude to the Orchestra’s tour to South Africa

This summer Music Director Osmo Vänskä and the Minnesota Orchestra will visit one of the world’s most famous classical music festivals, the BBC Proms. Vänskä will lead the Orchestra in an all-American program comprising Leonard Bernstein’s Overture to Candide, George Gershwin’s Piano Concerto in F, with Inon Barnatan as soloist, and Charles Ives’ visionary Second Symphony on Monday, August 6, 7 p.m., at London’s Royal Albert Hall. Following the performance, the Orchestra will embark on its previously announced, five-city tour to South Africa, August 7 to 19. The engagement marks the Minnesota Orchestra’s third performance at the BBC Proms.

Classical Minnesota Public Radio will share a live broadcast of the Proms concert on its statewide network, including KSJN 99.5 FM in the Twin Cities. The broadcast, slated for 1pm Central on August 6, will be hosted by the BBC and MPR’s Brian Newhouse. The program will also be broadcast live throughout the U.K. on the BBC.

The BBC Proms, the world’s largest classical music festival, is a 123-year tradition in London that encompasses eight weeks of programming and more than 90 concerts, with an aim to bring the best classical music to the widest audience. The 2018 Proms season, which was announced earlier today in London, will run from July 13 to September 8. Led by Vänskä, the Minnesota Orchestra made its BBC Proms debut in 2006 and returned in 2010 for a pair of concerts that included a performance of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony with the BBC Symphony Chorus.

The Minnesota Orchestra will open its evening at Royal Albert Hall with Bernstein’s Overture to Candide, among the most popular of 20th-century American orchestral showpieces. Israeli pianist Inon Barnatan, who performed on the Orchestra’s Midwest tour in January, will interpret Gershwin’s Concerto in F. “Everyone knows Rhapsody in Blue, but Gershwin’s concerto is not so familiar,” says Vänskä. “There are similarities in the music of both works and it’s a truly wonderful American piece. It is a tremendous honor for the orchestra to play this program at the Proms.” The program concludes with Charles Ives’ five-movement Symphony No. 2, which stands as a monument to American individualism; the Minnesota Orchestra performance of the work will mark only the second time that it has ever been performed at the Proms.

Minnesota audiences will have the opportunity to hear the same program on Wednesday, August 1, at Orchestra Hall, in a Tour Send-off celebration. Tickets are available now at minnesotaorchestra.org.
